An Ode to Tropes

Exs and Os by Amy Lea

Romance

Ratings: 4/5

Will you like this book? You might if you like:

  • Hunky firefighters

  • Second-chance romances

  • Room-ances

  • Forced proximity romances

  • Junk food

In this fun book by Amy Lea, Tara Chen ends up one of my favorite tropes, the Forced Proximity romance, as she moves in with Trevor Metcalf, her future brother-in-law’s fellow firefighter and friend, after she needs a place to live. Trevor is what we would call a Rake if this was a historical romance (Lea has a great send up to this); he sleeps with a lot of women and he is afraid to be in a relationship. Tara is reeling from her latest break-up; her fiance, a doctor in the NICU where she is a nurse, dumps her and starts dating another doctor, at the same hospital. Tara, who has her own romance YouTube, has decided she needs to revisit her exs in case her great love, like her grandmother, is one of my other favorite tropes, the Second Chance romance (have you read Every Summer After yet??). Trevor, obviously a really great guy, is there to help her through it all, especially when it inevitably goes wrong.

I love how much Tara loves love; all of her previous relationships have ended because she was too extra, too clingy, too much the crazy ex-girlfriend. And I think what I love most about this is something Tara says, she is not the cool girl that watches sports and acts aloof. No, she is the majority of us, we rush headlong into the lust and the love and the baby carriage.

This was a laugh-out-loud book, Lea is a great writer and the book is both funny and touching, something I believe all good romances should be: you want to laugh and cry. This is the first book I’ve read by Lea but I’ve put Set On You, the first book in the series, on hold at the library and can’t wait for the next one. This book reminded me a bit of parts of the movie He’s Just Not That Into You and more specifically the relationship between Justin Long and Ginnfer Goodwin. If you haven’t seen it, well it is worth a view.
